From
the second floor, the family/servants' stair rises around an
open light well in three flights to the fifth floor. The openness
of the stair was in part due to Cabot's efforts to provide natural
light into the middle of the house from a large skylight in the
ceiling of the fifth-floor stairwell.
The
ventilation shaft is equally vertical in its aspect, but only
four feet in diameter. This view looks up from the third
floor. Its walls are a pale green, and still retain their original
stencilling.
